Cold and flu season is upon us—at least the first round of it. Instead of chugging Nyquil and using menthol rubs, there are herbal options to help you fight illness. Some of these herbal remedies may even be in your backyard garden!
Garlic has long been touted as an immune system booster, and numerous studies have found that people given regular doses of garlic supplements are better able to ward off viruses like the flu and various strains of rhinovirus, the kind responsible for the common cold. Taking garlic supplements or eating fresh garlic daily can give you higher immunity, and studies also found that when garlic takers did get sick, they recovered more quickly. Mince a clove of fresh garlic into some honey to dull the flavor.
Echinacea might not do much for you once you get a cold, but there is some evidence that it could prevent colds and flus if taken in conjunction with garlic supplements. Take it as a supplement or tea daily.
Thyme, either fresh, dried or kept as an essential oil, can help you feel better once you succumb to the cold or flu. Thyme is a natural expectorant, which loosens mucus in the chest and makes coughs more productive. Brew a thyme herbal tea by steeping two teaspoons of fresh thyme in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. A thyme steam bath is another relaxing and healing option. Toss either a handful of dried thyme a few drops of thyme essential oil into a bowl of hot water. Lean over the bowl, covering both your head and the bowl with a towel so you can inhale the steam.
