One of the biggest trends in landscape design is the use of edible plants to create a stunning landscape with function. One of the keys to a successful edible landscape is thinking outside of the traditional garden rows to create a stylish outdoor layout.

Edible landscaping can be just as attractive as traditional shrubs or groundcover, but with the added benefit that you can eat it too! Just as you would plan a traditional landscape design, start planning your edible landscaping by drawing a sketch of the yard and your proposed design scheme. From there, determine shady and sunny areas and use the same gardening sensibilities to chose what plants to place in which locations.

What makes edible landscaping exciting is how plants are mixed together to create different color and height combinations. Use principles of companion planting to group plants that will grow best together.

Choosing plants for your edible landscape will come down to your personal preference on what you like to eat, but it is a great opportunity to include some plants that are too big for your vegetable or herb garden. Consider replacing shrubs with blueberry bushes or grape vines. Switch out floral groundcover to include a variety of fragrant and floral herbs.
